I am now brought to the second class of the two distinct parties entrusted with the sums provided for obligations to individuals of the Cherokee nation, -vis: the Agents, bearing various designations and appointed at various times. These agents were charged with the removal of the Cherokees to the west, and with their subsistence on the way hither?, and after their arrival. The principal of them appears to have been John Ross, Chief of the Cherokees. The account of Mr Ross, and which I understand has been paid, appears to be as follows: For removing thirteen detachments (say of one thousand each, more or less), - $1,263,338:48 1/4 Subsistence & forage prior to departure - 94,407:38 1/4 $1,357,745:86 1/2 This, however, is not the only account.
