Dear Jack -

Thanks for yr letter. It was simply that I had this last submission to be made & there was the coincidence of seeing yr review, etc. as stated. It was the answer I expected. So I picked a pub. by lot & yesterday I sent off Submission #321 [approx. - as with the Kerchel catalogue, there is some doubt...] maybe the 93rd for HOGBUTCHERS, and that's the end. It dates back to 1958, not 1959, & damn near sold in early 1959. But of course they wanted changes - some crap abt making it a "Beat" novel or something - ...
The way I felt about underlined: December, et. al. is shown in Pt #6 on the reverse of this. [ From underlined: Small Press Review ] I feel about this just as I feel about boycotting grapes & lettuce - same general idea By now I've heard all the arguments against this stand - without being convinced. What may be heartening, though, is that the editor of the magazine received a half dozen letters from Little Mag editors & mostly they agree with my stand. In the past, they've resorted to all sorts of snide ad hominem attacks, breast beatings about their services to literature & elaborate poor mouthing. [ One lament I received was typed with electric typewriter on 20# rag stationery embossed in two colors!] Well - after 27 years & 14 books etc. etc. I'm happy to be through with this crap. Mostly I've done good work & this shipwrecked sailor bids you & everybody else to keep sailing.
