As a painter, in trying to put the emotion on  canvas a man trys to seize the essential things that produced that emotion. In cutting loose from the representation of the visual sensations we receive from this world I believe abstract painters are in a blind alley. It is all intellect & cannot affect us deeply. I saw some of Walther's abstracts but I liked his things after Matise better. One thing he showed me painted last year, these flower pots, was very nice. He told me Duncan Phillips had bought several of his painting's. That makes me think more of Duncan Phillips.. At least he must be willing to take a chance once in a while. I had always not quite understood the Book of the [[grotesque?]]
