1 On the night of the fire, as I was going to bed I noticed a fire in the city, but paid no attention to it. But awoke about three O.C. in the morning and there was a great light shining in my window. I immediately ordered my horse + drove to town. I got only as far South as Superior St. It was still quite dark, except the fire light and the wind blowing a gale in going east on Superior St. my horse stopped and on getting out I found I was among the timbers +cetc? of the steeple of the Catholic Cathedral which had been blown off before any fire had reached it. There was no fire then in the immediate neighborhood. thought I believe some buildings father north were burning I went to Mrs Roberts house, found it open but deserted, I went on to Mr Tiemans, they had all gone except John Stockton, who was trying to save some small things. I found Mrs Stokes and Miss Sally, not knowing what to do or where to go. Gail .S. + his son had gone north carrying their silver. I put Mrs Stoked + MIss Sally in my gig, and also an old family portrait, they were anxious to save + taking the horse by the head we went to Chicago Av., there the fire was all around us. we went west as fast as I could run, to Dearborn St. and thence north. Above Walton place I found Mr Tieman. I took out the portrait (which we afterwards saved) + put him in and told him to drive home + send my cart back + to tell the boys to put the carriage horses in the hunting wagon + to come down quickly, which was done + we spent the forenoon moving furniture +cetc? to Lincoln Park
