'pressing letter of introduction' - During my progress 'up Town' I fell into several ditches, got into several quagmires, got into one or two cul-de-sacs when at last I got into an avenue something like a street - but all was dark save the light in the lower part of a house. I replied in the affirmative - told all I thought would be interesting to my hearers - the night was apace & altho the Boarding House was full of people. The 'Stranger' was accomodated. It was made known to me some months afterwards that the above individual in question wrote a very lacrymose letter to London informing the party who had given the letter of introduction "hat he was sorry If I was a dear friend of his, for he could not take me to his heart &c" 'refer to letter Spoke of my immoral conduct &c. |
