To the left of John Ross's signature- the "Ch" looking letters are Cherokee syllabary for "Ja-ni," or "John". The other syllabary word at the right of John Ross's signature is "Gu-wi-s-gu-wi" (Koo-wi-s-gu-wi) or Cooweescoowee, which is John Ross's Cherokee name.
