My Dear Wife:
I have received from you five letters since I came here dated the 1st, 5th, 10th, 12th and 16th April. That of the 12th came while I was in the mountains, that of the 16th a few minutes ago. How eagerly I watch for them, nobody else knows. You see this being Indian Agent is a queer position. Last week I was more than halfway to the proposed post, but the rest of the way is blocked up. I can see the very drifts from my window 60 miles away, - or could a few minutes ago, for as I turn my eyes from this sheet thitherward, I find the snow range hid by a wild snowstorm which intervenes while I am in my shirtsleeves, enjoying the most agreeable temperature imaginable, neither warm nor cold. I told the Governor this morning that I was just beginning to appreciate the compliment involved in this appointment. No "short sighted" individual
