Friday 22 '[?]' came in from the West with some runaways & a few Volunteers - When Gl Davis with some 200 volunteers left C. Christi they made their Encampment at Sandiplan some 35 miles from C.C on opposite side of the River - Gl D. had twenty uniformation of Gl Canalis coming on with 700 men [two unclear words] & 200 Infantry - where he had taken up his headquarters was not a good fortress & he removed with a [?] leaving his baggage, papers etc - This was [?] - the Enemy attacked - was beaten back, leaving [?] Hills with 20 wounded & some prisoners but took all the Texan baggage etc - This they would construe into a Victory altho they lost some dozen or more & a few prisoners taken - The Texans not one - The enemy to other [?] of [?] - a few [?] in [?] towards C. Christi they are approbably some 5000 Soldiers & Ranchers with [?] the Volunteers are at Salhar having been join by some 260 who went from here [four unclear words].  It is presumed that for the present Canalis will remain at C. Christi
  [three unclear words] do as what we ought & do then is a diversity of opinion - [?] the Enemy [?] he I doubt not should be prepared for them.
