I can't understand why I never heard from Stone. I wrote a short letter requesting the use of his name as reference & asking about schools & living conditions in N.Y. He offered to recommend me for an assistantship at the U. of Michigan so surely it can't be that he was insincere to that extent in his compliments of my work. Either he's as unreal as Fiedler or else something unusual has happened- illness or something. I wish I knew what the score was. What do you think? | I can't understand why I never heard from Stone. I've been looking for classified ado's in the Times here & it finally dawned on me that that section is not mailed to Montana. I saw the write-up of "Cherry Orchard in the Times & wondered if you had seen it. Was it as "refreshingly free of traditional encumbrance" as they said? Did you meet Shelley Winters?
