Sept. 14 We reciev'd a letter from you last night. And we will commence a reply which will probably continue to accresce [sic: increase?] under our hands untill we recieve your answer to our last sent 2 or 3 days ago
  In relation to your difficulties with Messrs Steele, Chase, Crane etc. it will be of no use to say any thing as my remarks will be much behind the time before they can reach you.  Howsoever Edward Crane Esq., when I knew him was a good sort of a man I thought, Smart & a good business Man, a fine thing for you to keep the right side of him if you can He probably knows as much as  as all the rest of your R.R. folks together: it may be more as yourself call 'em a pack of Fools. He would be worth most as much to you in the long run as your firm friend as all New Hampshire, Dunbarton excepted, I have seen him frequently. Goss & Upham us'd to do a good deal of business with his Firm. My Friend J. R.K. Hayward of Bangor, formerly of Matamascantis, became on the right side of him and is quite a man thereby. If you were properly consulted about it I see no impropriety in putting on another party if need be to expedite business. In that case you should not   " too fond to rule alone"

It would to be sure be very appropriate to have such party Suspended to your authority, but if they were not I should think you had better put up with it rather than to leave so long as you remain invested with a separate and independant command altho' it be a more limited one than you are entitled to
