The boats scraped, repainted and put in the water; lilacs bloomed in the dockyards and chadblow by the roadside. From the reef below the light house the bell buoy rolled and wallowed in the rushing tides, clanging its warnings to the occasional freighter making for Bangor or the yacht cruising the Bay, and striking the coastal air hearts of the Castini summer colony with memories of younger summers.
In those days the summer colony was small and being established. Most people owned their houses and since many were ministers of university professors of limited means who had work to do in the holidays, several customs had examined simple.
