Journey from Columbus to San Antonio de Bejar &c -
11th - Left in company by the road that goes through the settlements & not by the main one.  On our way crossed skull creek, which takes its name from a desperate battle that was fought here between Austins first settlers & the Tonkeway indians. The indians were beaten & their skulls & bones remained at the spot for years. In crossing the Western fork of the Navidad river, we discovered a chalybeate spring running into the stream. There is some pretty country on the Navidad, sufficient timbered & well suited for corn, cotton & stock; in it & small tributaries, there is trout, perch, catfish, & game  we saw deer, wild turkey, prairie hens
