and 4 & 5 are separated by running brooks of pure water. Good hay bottom directly in front of sites. Black-jack timber plenty and near. Chapman says excellent building stone is to be found on divide two to five miles south. Good road to Supply. Disadvantages. Strategically on wrong side of river, very little cottonwood or other timber (except black-jack) in immediate vicinity. Directly in front to northward is a heavy slough, above five miles directly to eastward is another very large slough. I do not believe these will affect the health of the troops at the post, but the question should be decided by one more skillled in Hygiene than myself. There is no very good place for a cantonment near these sites (See topographical sketch No. 2). Several fair sites for a Post were found on Serapin Creek, north of Barrel Springs, but the difficulty of getting at them in the extraordinarily broken country, and the execrable water |
