MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1864. Reported at 81/2 o'clock and gave Capt. Halstead my letter of introduction. Studied harder today than I ever did before Will be examined tomorrow. Have no confidence. Feel as if I would not pass.
TUESDAY 16 Was examined the second one in the morning; and by the assistance of Providence kept cool & got along very well. Ascertained I had passed as 1st Class Captain. Heard H. Winter Davis make a speech on the admission of Arkansas
WEDNESDAY 17 Called on Mrs Justin & family. Heard Senator Davis make a violent speech in reference to the writ of habeas corpus & attacking Massachusetts & her Senator. Went down to the Arsenal. Called on Robertson & Johnson J.G & on Capt Halstead
