21st. Immediately after Reveille 25 men went out to the spot pointed out by Whalen and found the bodies of the missing soldiers. They had accidentally been waylaid and fired on while passing a large rock. From appearances the Corpl had been killed by the first shot but Fitzpatrick had run about an hundred yards and then been killed, and horribly mutilated, having his skull crushed in and a number of arrows shot into him. | |||
