This was a great day in this city. In the forenoon all the distinguished military men in the city called in a body on Sec. Stanton. at the head of the column was Gen (Halluk?). I recognised Gen. H. Gen Heintzlman, Gen Cadwalader, Gen Mc Dowell, Garfield etc In the afternoon I went to the President's reception. Had the pleasure of shaking hands with "Honest Abe." He seemed in good spirits & looked well. Went to the Soldier's Free Library & along with about 2000 soldiers received some apples & cakes sent by the ladies of mass

Went to the Soldier's Free Library & along with about 2000 soldiers received some apples & cakes sent by the ladies of Mass Jan 2nd Nothing of interest happened today Jan 3rd Ditto Jan 4th Attended Dr, Gurly's Church in the morning, as I went on guard at (1?)
