price and bring him money. The young prince hearing of his sent out his slaves and beat Rajab for doing what every smart merchant does in civilized countries. viz Monopolized the saleable articles. Such things as yams, potatoes, fowls, oranges &c are very plenty and cheap Irish Potatoes will not thrive here but soon run into sweet potatoes. Camels are not very numerous but are quite common. If I was able I would introduce the Camel into the United States for they would be of immense use on the great western praries. And no doubt will one day or other be brought over. tho. the states may be to [sic] cold yet the high lands of Mexico California &c are not. and these will no doubt be inhabited by English or American highlanders or Arabs whose hand will be against every man and every mans hand against them. then if camels will live in the lat of 34. to 58º N. they will be of immense use to transport goods across the country from the Atlantic to the Pacific or the reverse. The celebrated Mocha whence comes the Mocha Coffee belongs to this sultan tis said to be the hotest [sic] place in the world (except Muscat) for the winds blow directly from off the hot heated desert. here, even the winds from the W are hot and sultry and scarcely fit to breathe. There it is much worse, this harbour is chock full of sharks and they form the principal food of the natives. An American ship came in from Boston. she was out on a trading voyage She met with a great deal of opposition here from the Yankee traders who fear interlopers: I never saw such fierce opposition before in the way of trade. there was a total eclipse of the Moon on the 24th. I never saw a prettier sight in my life. The Natives were all very much frightened and kept up an incessant drumming all night howling dancing and singing beating on drums tin pans and boards making a most infernal clatter to scare away the big devil that was going to swallow the Moon. I had told several men a day or so previous about the eclipse they only laughed at me and asked me how I knowed. when they saw me again they pulled off their head covers to me as a great man. I notice a curious snail that was very common here it was sometimes as large as a mans fist and one I think was twice as large during our stay the sultan made a practice of sending us off a present of fruit and vegetables and before we sailed he sent us off a present of a goat. each mess in the ship The consul gave us a dinner party before we sailed and was very kind to us during our stay. On the 27th November sailed the french corvette also sailed we took the consul with us as far as a small isle in the harbour where finding wind and tide ahead came to anchor. When the consul left the ship our band struck up home Sweet home. it was a strange sight and filled us all with peculiar and strange thoughts of home. then to see these Adventurous Yankees on the scorching and sickly coast of Africa pushing ahead and spreading the name and fame of the Yankee Nation to the heart of Africa. There was two ignorant sailors who run off from the 1st Cutter whilst Watering the Capt offered a reward for them and they were brought down that night in irons the next day they were punished. they both were taken sick with the African fever afterwards and came near dying. A crew of an American Whaler ran off here also they were three weeks on the isle and all died. The night air and dews are nearly always fatal to strangers. Our ship had been painted a lead color with a red streak as it is well known that black draws the heat and wishing to keep cool and healthy our ship was painted the above color. This the Banyans, Parsees &c admired very much as it is the color which they paint their temples.
