sick with Jaunders. "that solid falsehood, the material", -- "what might have been."
Isaac. Grouts, Dec. 17th 1848
Dear Brother Joseph Yours of the 12th inst duly received. I happen to have a pen in my fingers just now, but am by no meanst confident that I shall write an Epistle in full just yet. If I did its financial tone might be somewhat too apparent; that is if the sheet did not get tinged with certain "stomachic effusions" of a vomitic rather than poetic nature. Did you ever see a yellow dog? one of the true foolblooded Yallers? Well, I am not going to California. There is no need of it. It's all a humbug. I haven't got to get a yaller dog to carry to the mint either. I believe I shall go myself though. How many half eagles will 165 lbs good weight without boots or hair make? There are all sorts of folks here at our City of Grouts, and I find it perfectly safe to keep my door locked a nights lately, lest some of 'em should turn "Gold Hunters", and clip off "the Engineer's" fingers or toes for yellow boys. Did you ever see any one who had the Jaundice -- the real "yaller jaunders" Well I have been just so afflicted in the hardest kind and it is quite a serious business I assure you. It is quite a rare disease, commonly at most, occasional only in the Spring. But there seems to be some thing peculiar in this miserable abominable little Millers River upon whose shores I am condemned to dwell; perhaps also in the season At any rate the disease is extremely prevalent here, all along our Vt. & Mass. R.R. line, and I have had it the very worst kind. As I understand it the Gall overflows and runs all over the system. The "victim" becomes dull and stupid, almost lifeless, sleepy -- why I could sleep 18 or 20 hours out of the 24. Yellow as saffron; no life left but Nausea.
