in the Wild Wheat, hundreds of Tons could be cut here for hay.  Some of the Straw will measure 7 feet and all of it is Very tall.  We are now 19 Miles from Kanyon City for which place We Will Start tomorrow  the Weather has altered much for the better the days dry & pleasant  the nights bright but rather chilly toward Morning
in the Wild Wheat, hundreds of Tons could be cut here for hay.  Some of the Straw will measure 7 feet and all of it is Very tall.  We are now 19 Miles from Kanyon City for which place We Will Start tomorrow  the Weather has altered much for the better the days dry & pleasant  the nights bright but rather chilly toward Morning We are now nearly down from the high Mountain Region and tomorrow night if succesfull we Shall be at the base of the mountain system and on the plains of the Arkansas  All the party enjoy excellent health and delighted with the change of climate
 
Tuesday Aug 28  Camped last night in Kanyon City so much looked for and all heartily disapointed instead of a bright new nice little City of some Thousand houses as we had a right to Expect from the report of parties interested, here we are on a Clay plain on the banks of he Arkansans and within a gun shot of the Kanyon of the Mountain where the River disembogues on to the plain. in the Old &  New Cities so called there May be 100 log houses a few tents and some waggons  Most of the houses are tenantless waiting for the Miners to take them up for Winter Quarters, the Climate is desirable here nothing else.  the Clay ground is a light drab and and at this time of writing the Street is Covered with a [?prolonged mess?] some 3 inches deep as fine as flour and blown up in clouds with a slight breese giving the whole population the appearance of dirty Millers it must always be a dusty place and I doubt whether it will ever be a large city however great exertions are made to build.  We are offered a choice City lot for housing on condition that we put up a log or frame house and also 5 lots to be drawn for in less desirable points in the City    We fear that it will not pay to Spend our Winter so besides I have taken a great dislike to this Clay hole, there is also a Soda Spring in the city not to be compared tho with the one at in Near Colorado  we will stay here a
