and though I have not so much hard work to do, I find enough to occupy my attention. It is the season of the year when there is always something to do to prepare for winter & much in the children's 'fixings' had been left for my direction so I have necessarily been pretty busy since our return from the journey. I wrote a full account of our excursion with the disappointment about visiting Isaac in a letter to Lucy suppose it probable that you have seen it . Mrs. deWitt feels more troubled about I believe than I do, much as my heart was set upon it doubtless it was all for the best that we were prevented from fulfilling our intentions in the matter. I have written to Isaac but not heard from him since. It was two weeks last Thursday since we arrived at home. At first all was strange to me & I felt much less like the mistress of the mansion than as a mere boarder or stranger in it. Nothing has been wanting to make me feel at home & gradually the feeling of 'appropriation' comes, first and foremost in respect to my husband - children too & the house with its arrangements; the appointments of which generally are quite to my taste & you know what that implies. The faithful efficient German girl relieves me entirely from household care indeed she is more a housekeeper then common help, for she keeps everything
