and shaped some caves with arched entrances looking as if they were chiselled by man - other places that look like hewn Monuments - others like the ruins of ancient castles - within a few miles of Alton there are a great many Lime Kilns which I should think would make a large share of the business of the place - between Alton and St Louis the fruit trees were all in blossom and looked very pleasing - at 9 1/2 Oclock we were in St Louis - and after considering and concluding to go to Cincinnati by railroad I commenced exploring the City - St Louis is an awful big place or at least it is destined to be as unlike many of the river cities it has plenty of territory on which to build and from present appearances it is going ahead very fast - I have seen during my perambulations life in all its phases (I should think) and were I compelled to live as I saw hundreds living - surely life would not be very Sweet - there seems to be a great deal of manufacturing here especially Machine and Iron works - also many flouring Mills - and hundreds of brick kilns - Pork packing seems to be an important branch of business - but I pity the people that are obliged to eat it - they toss it about in the mud and dirt - and it is enough to make one sick to think of ever eating such stuff - at 5 Oclock I started for Cincinnati by rail road - St Louis is about 250 miles from Burlington and the distance from St Louis to Cincinnati by Railroad is 371 miles -

     Slept pretty well last night considering I was in the cars and this morning feel quite bright - the Terre Haute rail road [?] through some of he most beautifil [sic] Prairie lands in Illinois although we passed the best portion of them before light - Terre Haute is quite a place being at the junction of several rail roads it is of considerable importance - at  9 1/4 Oclock we started for Indianapolis - reached that place at  12 1/2  Oclock and left again at 1 for Cincinnati  Indianapolis is quite a fine looking place - it has the State House and some other fine looking buildings and being at the junction of several
