My excursion to Chicago cost me 3,25. am glad I went. The various shifting of circumstances, - the arrangement and ordering of the complicated fretwork and frame of Providence, has its fearing on each individual being nicely adjusted to suit the need or accomplish the result intended for each, so the same train of events brings infinite deities of fortune and experience according to the varying circumstances of each one:- If last March, Miss Marsh's brother and friends who had professed to be friends - hand not turned against Mr. Hopkins, my situation through the summer would have been very uncomfortable, my stay unwelcome without any great blame anywhere but simply from the natural workings of human nature, thus events very painful to Mr. & Mar. H operate in a measure, in my favor. As it is Mrs. H does not wish to retain Miss W. if she could get along about Algebra I don't know but I shall try to study it myself, but I do not want to; - in order to secure the needful elasticity of mind while much demands one made upon the physical and mental nature as must be in teaching steadily: one needs ease and recreation rather than forced and worrying application. It was a mistake in me not to make myself acquainted with that and practical Botany: with my experience in that case I could command a much more desirable situation. Mrs H means to have me keep the school while she goes east: without much vacation till last of Aug. It will be harder for me, I spend the summer, especially after Mrs. H. goes. for the governess housekeeper and myself one like the repelling, holes of the magnet. She dislikes me is a person of [right-hand side]very strong prejudice; is terribly fidgety, awful particulars with one of the sharp [top upside down] cold blue eye, sarcastically dictatorial: -- where Mrs. H. like her, I should not have been her assistant long. I have some petty annoyances but not perhaps taking the trouble to write; something amiss is found everywhere, some faults in every character, here is the [left-hand side] most perfect management in housekeeping; everything orderly, nice, comfortable.
