middle, and the name of the college to which one belongs, at the bottom. This has perhaps full as much of religious character as any of them, and will probably be a very good society but it is young, & having the last choice I don't think it has the best members in this college yet. I am strongly solicited to join it and don't know but I had better, if there is no chance of an election to the Psi Upsilon. If I had come here a little better dressed last fall I think I might have joined which I chose. The estimation of one will depend some on that you know. You may call the whole matter foolish, but it is about necessary to join some one; about every decent fellow in the class does, and one does not feel well left alone, besides it may be thought you did it because could not, which imputation would be by no means favorable to one's character for scholarship. Their advantages too are not to be disposed. besides here, they finish one with friends. There are badges in all our college, and it is worth something to be recognized whenever you are among literary or educated men. The badges cost $5,00 & the expenses are something besides 2,00 Initiation fee for & taxes paid probably. 29the I was initiated in the Athenaean Society on June 20th. The annual election of officers of the society was on the 25th. I was elected Treasurer of the society for the ensuing year. It is an office of more care than dignity. I did not want to hold office this year, but could not get rid of it. The offices in our class, Sec. Treas, Second Com. Lib & Ed are of course not being honorable, though perhaps some want them. Sec is the best. One thing the Treas. as he keeps the accounts & collects the feed & takes, is absolved from all dues himself to the soc. One other thing, it is the custom for the offices elect to furnish a supper, or treat, or what ever called, to the society, at Common Hall, Fruit, nuts, cakes, & Lemonade, with toasts & speeches till 10 or 11 'o clock. Those expense being some 25,00 to 50,00 but divied among some 15 year fee, comes not heavy on one, especially us, as the officers of the supper class pay higher. Perhaps only 1,00 each. Junes 3,00 or 5,00 I have asked to spend $3,00 for books this term but I mean to sell some at the end of the term for the Freshmen about to be Sophs We are most furious you see
