Septr 16th  Antwerp, a fortified city when we awoke this morning. we were in the Schet & at 8 o'clock landed at Anvers & put up at the Hotel de St Antoine from whence we went to see the cathedral, the [[museum?]] or the picture gallery where we saw we saw many paintings of Rubens one of the largest on canvas in the world from the bible chapter & he took [?] & walked.  Some of Van Eyck & band the most of which were very pretty. L'Eglise de St Jaques & many other places that I do not recollect at present. At the cathedral we saw 2 large pictures by Rubens which were taken to Paris during the Revolution one of which represents the descent from the cross this is to the right as you face the altar on one of the folding door is represented the salutation of the Virgin + the other the presenting of our infant Jesus in the Temple  This picture is the most celebrated of Rubens  We went up the tower of this cathedral which has I think 548 steps from which we saw nothing but a perfect mass of roofs
