We left Lynchburg about 4 p.m. As we marched through the town I observed that Lynchburg is a dirty place, the sheets are filthy and rough.  It is situated among the mountains and hills.  There are a great many hospitals here.  Several of them are filled with wounded from our army.  I noticed one very fine building on the right, south of town:  this building is at present used as a hospital, what it was before the war, I know not.  It appears that General Hunter in his late advance crossed to the south side of the James and approached within a mile and a half of [[them?]].  We passed over ground today where some of hte fighting had taken place.  I have read some in the Testament today.

We camped last night in a fine little valley about 5 miles from Lynchburg.  The country which we passed on the evening of the 30th and the morning of the 1st was hilly and mountainous resembling [[unclear]] Valley.  In the afternoon today the country became more level some of the scenery is beautiful.  The land here is very poor.  We camped at night on the Stanton River.  distance marched 20 miles.  The Stanton River is a narrow rapid, clear, and beautiful mountain stream here and we had a nice bath in its delightful waters.
