He is and always will be wholly unfit for duty with his Regiment. He lost his right arm during the war and is moreover afflicted with Inflamatory Rheumatism, which frequently keeps him in bed ten days at a time, and so affects his remaining arm, as to render him Entirely helpless.

              He is very useful to me as interpreter and translator, being a fine Spanish scholar, and in this way more than repays the Government for his Expenses here, which are only for his Quarters and fuel - about forty Dollars per month.
              In consideration of his usefulness here and of his misfortunes, I hope the Secretary will permit me to retain him on duty at my Headquarters.  I have no choice as to whether he performs the duty of Depot Commissary or not.  I did not keep him for that purpose, but as Captain Cushing desired an officer for that duty, consented to his performance of it.
