106 576. MO. MIL. DIV. [left margin] July 28, 1874. Dear General Sheridan,
MacKenzie came in here night before last, having left his Companies beyond the Pecos. He had not received the order for his movement, but came in to see me in other matters. He started back to Fort Clark last night to give the necessary orders for putting the Companies of his Regiment in motion. A hundred Recruits for his Regiment will be here to-morrow, and will go immediately on. He wishes them to arrive at Fort Clark before he starts, and they can do so before the Companies from the Pecos can, as the latter have to hunted up. We had talked the matter over very fully, and I have agreed with him upon what should be done, that is in our opinion I assume that the troops once in position on the Northern frontier of Texas, that no force of Indians - or if any - but very small parties will be found inside the line of such troops, and that therefore the number of troops at the several Posts may be much reduced during these operations. I will leave Clark two Companies each of Cavalry and Infantry. Duncan, McKavett, Concha, Davis and Stockton each two Companies of Infantry and one of Cavalry. Griffin possibly with one of each and Richardson two of each. With regard to Sill, I cannot say definitely, until I hear more fully from Davidson. This will enable me to give Mackenzie to operate with from his Old Supply Camp at [strike] on Fresh Fork of Brazos nine (9) Companies of Cavalry and four (4) of Infantry. Buell to operate with, between MacKenzie and Davidson, four Companies of Cavalry and two of Infantry. Davidson, who should establish a Supply Camp near Otter Creek, from which to cooperate with the others. I propose to give six Companies of Cavalry and two of Infantry, and still leave three of Each arm, to look after Fort Sill. If that is not regarded as sufficient for Fort Sill, I may be able to give another Company of Infantry from Richardson. These Columns, acting together, can soon clean out all hostile Indians to the Kansas line. I think it important however that the troops from the Department of Missouri shall act in concert - the Sixth Cavalry from Camp Supply, or in advance, and the Cavalry from New Mexico, via Fort Bascom, and along
