August 23, 1954 Dear Jack:
I was both pleased and terribly sorry to get your letter. I can only begin to imagine how sad and upset you all were. I never met your son - I think you and I were just stags foot loose in Chicago. If I had though perhaps I could realize still more how you must feel. The outsider is always so damnably helpless. London - where I have been for more than two weeks - is, as always, just marvelous. The people are friendly, the food good and the city is, in spite of the horrible wet & cold weather, truly warm. Have been too busy to wander down the narrow streets, browse in the book-shops and sit in the parks - but I've been here before and just love it. There aren't any geniuses that I know of but believe me - I'm looking. Whether or not any books come out of this trip it will be worth while. Get your hiking boots out & try that long walking tour. Whether you need it or not England will make a new man out of you.
