6 It was then the month of april, the winter had disappeared & cold 'Northers' were ? up in the icy fastnesses of the rocky mountains until the following winter. The weather altho' warm for a European, was tempered by the fresh southern breezes, the air felt pure, the sky was clear both by day & night, the latter period illuminated by a bright Moon & on its leaving our longitude the heavens were to be seen studded with brilliant stars. In a day or two after this, the morning was close cloudy & sultry, occasional showers, rapid flashes of lightning & deep booming thunder resounded over the gulf - then came on a furious hurricane ranging from N to N.N.E. with torrents upon torrents of rains - sheet & forked lightning of the most vivid description with its accompanying quantity of thunder - all this Elemental strife was increased if possible at intervals, & with occasional heavy falls of large hail storms. This continued about four hours, when it subsided, the sky became blue again & the freshness of spring succeeded.

   Much damage was done to the shipping in the harbor;  the garden was almost ruined, some small wooden houses upset, others twisted from their foundation into the streets, which now had a zig-zag appearance
