After the hair is combed out the Dakotas use a pointed stick to pass through the hair to part it in the middle of the head. We imagine this devise came into use quite early as it is easy to see that in the absence of glass a pointed stick passed through the hair would enable the squaws to detect by the pinking of the point whether or not she had the stick in the middle line. The stick was passed back commencing at the forehead. This specimen is from the Lower Brule Agency as is also the comb. and is twelve inches long about half the length is handle and is wrapped with red, green and white quills and to the end is attached a tassle consisting of two strands of buckskin wrapped with porcupine quills. red. and green. terminating in tin cones with green horsehair. | |||
