   Afternoon returned to San Antonio, with Major Hays Mises A & R with Monsr. Jean Bonnian of Angouline in company; on reaching that place found that Monsieur had the reputation of being "un peu fou", So if he persists is going to Mexico Major H. will make some arrangements for him.

   In the evening I had the pleasure of going with Dona I. M _one of the belles of San Antonio & the whole of her family to see the "Maromeros" or Prominent rope dancers and actors; the company consisted of a comical Payaso or clown, three young men & one female. The performance was al fresco in the court yard of a house in the public square. At the foot of the tight rope was made two large fires, this being the only illumination for actors & audience. The rope dancing over, tumbling commenced this being finished, upon a rude stage, a Comedy, & two farces followed, the three pieces occupying about twenty minutes. I cannot speak favorably of the
