   A few hundred yards from the church is the battle ground of the "Gross fight" on the 28th Octr 1835. under Bowie & Fannin. There were 92 Texans against 360 Mexicans. Of the Mexicans those men killed & wounded 100 men whilst on the part of their opponents only one killed named Andrews who unfortunately exposed himself too much.
   A few hundred yards from the church is the battle ground of the "Gross fight" on the 28th Octr 1835. under Bowie & Fannin. There were 92 Texans against 360 Mexicans. Of the Mexicans three men killed & wounded 100 men whilst on the part of their opponents only one killed named Andrews who unfortunately exposed himself too much.
   Three miles further & on the west bank of the river stands the Mission of San Jose, the church of which is still in good preservation built of stone - the [[turn?]]stone of the country, but the images of Saints & other ornamental parts have been sadly mutilated by the soldiery during the wars. The door way & windows of the Sacristy or vestry state show much exquisite work & labour had been bestowed upon them. On the corner of the church is the date of 1781 probably the year it was finished. There is only one bell
