horse for the days steady gait He is a splendid animal  walks & canters well, is gentle as a dog, but the most awful shyer I ever backed - I think he can turn end for end in the road quicker than any horse I ever saw.  I do not mind a shying horse ordinarily, - have never been unseated by one - but this rascal shies at the most inopportune moments & without regard to position - He once came very near going down the side of a mountain with me where we could not have stopped short of 500 feet & many times he has put his life & mine in jeopardy by his foolishness - By dint of severe thrashing I have almost cured him but my confidence is not sufficient to enable me to ride with perfect comfort when a return of his "little vice" might send us
