The Capt taking a small guard he proceeded up to the Mayors or govenors or as he is called in Turon the Manderine 1st Chop. took him and two or three others prisoners as hostages for the safety of the French Man. I was unfortunate enough to loose all the mess pumpkins, potatoes, pigs & which that morning had been bought The next morning afterwards 3 Men of War Junks came out of the Mouth of the river and anchored near The Ships near the enterence of the bay. It was Sunday. All day our boatmen were grinding cutlasses &c &c at abot [sic] 3 PM. (about the time the Chinese and the Turonese [crossed out: go to] take a nap) our expedition of 3 boats started, we soon pulled along side of them boarded and carried them without the loss of a single Man or without Sheding any blood the amusing circumstance happened. An old Baltimore Negroe black as soot and remarkable for his good nature and wit after boarding discovered a Cochin Chinese overboard swimming ashore he immediately presented a pistol called out oh you dam black heathen come back or I'll shoot you, The Cochin Chinese was three shades witer than Thomas the Negroe. As we got alongside I saw several of the Cochinese rising up as if just awakened one of them was taking the Tompion out of a gun. We got them underway but in doing so had to cut a cable or so. And when bringing them alongside. A Mid was obliged to cut the fore Halliards for this he was severely reprimanded by the 1st Lieut A day or two after we hauled the ship up nearer to the town the gunner was busy all the while loading shells. everything looked serious. The same evening we hauled up the Capt had been up to the town with a strong force under promise that Mr Lefever would be delivered up he took two Mandarines with him. The ship was sprung broadside to the town. and when the Capt entered the river we beat to quarters and remained there until he returned. All of us on board had strong suspicions of treachery intended. however he came off without trouble after coming off tried the ranges of our guns. There was a great number of fishing boats pulling out of the river at the sound of our gun the Whizzing of our shot they put back with great precipitation. The same evening sent a boat for our prizes, brought them near us. We found that their Captains had been visited by the Manderines and that they had punished
