During all this time we were kept busy. and soon filled up with water, on the 21st A Number of us visited the sultan and dined with him. he gave us a nice blow out. giving in every thing but hog meat. After filling up with water we hauled up off the town of Zanzibar which is about 3 miles to the S of Mtony The Sultan is named Seid-Seid-Ben Sultan, he is the sultan of Muscat and has lived here about 8 years he having moved from Muscat in 36, his reasons for so doing was that the English were too near him, so that his government is as yet not in as good order as he could wish it. his possession extend from Zanzibar to Mozambique to the S' and from Zanzibar to the mouth of the gulf of Persia to the Nd. an extent of coast as large as that of the United States. his power does not extend far in the interior his government is despotic but he is said to be a good and fatherly old Man to his people. his Father was a rebel and an usurper. he rebeled [sic] against the sultan of Mecca. At his death his brother usurped the throne and sold Seid the Sultans son was exiled, but he returned killed his uncle and put to death all opposers thus seated on his fathers throne, surrounded by Budoin [sic] Arabs of the Desert as guardsl he was feared but not loved, so dismissing them, he became a kind and fatherly man to his people. but it did not long last. he was too kind and the cities of Melinda and Mombas rebeled. he sent his son to subdue them but after |
