Nov 1  Left our Camp at the crossing of the Arkansas this morning and abut 10 oClock came upon a large drove of Buffaloes quietly pasturing on the Rolling Bluffs to the north of the River it was a grand and refreshing sight to see So Many Cattle spread over the hills it Made one think of home and the farm land.  Many of us took them to be a drove of Cattle on their way to the States  On closer inspection the fact [?] came to light and all the Rifles were brought to requisitory and we gave chase leaving our saddle horse with the Team fearing that he was too tired after our long Tornado march to be used today the result was that we did not succeed in taking a Buffaloe but Wounded two, and were soon out of our reach.  At noon we came up with a Company of returning [?] that we had seen in the Mountains they were Encamped on the Bank of the River some 25 miles below the Crossing.  We were mutually pleased with the Meeting for it made our party stronger and better able to defend ourselves agains any attack our company now numbered 6 Wagons and 18 men,  they had just killed a fine fat Buffaloe and we all had as much fine Beef as we could use.  the change from Antilope & Bacon to Bacon & Buffaloe was really very good and all did justice to the dish.  It is surprizing what an amount of Antelope Buffaloe or Deer meat one can consume in a day on the plains  My experiens is that I could eat more Game meat in one day here than I could of the Best Beef at Chicago in a Week  We have shot some fine old Grey Wolfs, at night the Camp was surrounded by the imudent fellows houling & Barking in a horrible manner.  they Learn to understand that we would not shoot them at night.  Wild ducks & Geese were very abundant and we succeded in getting a few fine fat Geese.  here we also meet a train of six Waggons with us offering &c bound for
