It is very toilsome having both small and large, so much variety of attainment, so much expected too in a private school, so many small classes, work, drawing, &c. and then so variable, the scholars who commence the term never all finish it, but leave without any notice any time: so I never know what to depend on, and the terms so low, that I can but just pay my expenses: now would it not be better for me to leave at once, & go west or south, when there are, no doubt chances enough, if I could find them, to have an easier time, and lay up money? What say you to going with me in the way of your profession to Penn. or Virginia, or to the Western States? I mean in good earnest to set myself about making inquiries, writing letters, to see if some opening cannot be found in which my time and energies may turn to better account than at present.
