Chicago, March 3d 1872 My dear daughter Your long letter to Gertrud was received a few days ago. It has greatly pleased me to notice that your knowledge of the English language has not in the least been interfered with by your sojourn in Europe, and your consequent want of practice. If anything, I find that in fluency of style and correctness of expression you have im proved. There are only a very few misspellings in the whole letter, _ in fact, I remember but one now:_ weak instead of week. the former is the German unclear, while the latter is, unclear, which you meant to say. But, taken all in all, the letter has given me great satisfaction. I wonder, if you have any opportunity to practice English conversation. To judge from the perfectly horrible pronunciation of English which Gerty has been taught in Dessau, there is considerable room for improvement there and you might give lessons in English pronunciation, - unless indeed the teachers over there should be so stupid or to believe their own horrid mispronun.
