An all nights ride over the cold snowy plains the weather all the time becoming colder. and in a miserable condition we found ourselves at daylight at the Village of Hepner a small place of a dozen houses situated on the head of Willow Creek a tributary of the Columbia - Hepner has been built up in the last 4 or 5 years. is near the foot of the Blue Mountains, and is situated in the midst of a fine grazing & agricultural country --
An early start, and after rolling over the hard frozen road, near all day, crossing Butter Creek - Birch Creek and McKay creek we found ourselves at 3 P.M. at Pendleton the County seat of Umatilla County, a flourishing place of 300 population. built up in a few years on the South side of the Umatilla River - Here we stop for the night
