Department of War, April 17th, 1838. Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt, this morning, of your letter of yesterday's date. The department does not see the practicability of being more clear and explicit than it was in the last letter addressed to the Cherokee delegation. It meant to convey the expression of the decided determination of the President to execute the laws of the land, and to carry into effect the treaty with the Cherokees; and a hope was indulged that the delegation, seeing that the President had no alternative, would zealously co-operate in preserving the peace of that country. The officer who has been sent to carry into effect the treaty stipulations with the Cherokee Nation, will do all in his power to accomplish that object peaceably.
