May, Thursday, 7. 1863.   Am still feeling quite unwell. Weather cool but not unpleasant. Wrote a letter to Bro William. Everything moving along smoothly in camp & out so far as I can learn.  No papers & no mail & no very reliable reports from below. But everything believed to be in a fine condition

Friday, 8. Was sent for this morning by Genl Reed   Learned he had sent a force to Bayou Macon to cross.  had crossed & found more opposition than they had expected & sent back for reinforcements which were being sent.  Continued to be on the alert. Had a dress parade for the first time at night.  Made requisitions for supplies & about sending to St Louis and Memphis.  Recd a letter from Mrs. Chilcote. [[Written at a 90 degree angle over the left side of this entry]]  Gave $100 to Peebles to purchase [[unclear]] &c in all [[unclear]] this for myself
