On the invention and definition of Philosophy

Philosophy was invented by Thales of Miletus, by Italian Pythagoras, by Anaxagoras and by the most wise Socrates; of whom excellence, & dignity some exhibited [in/with] these parts PHILOSOPHY, is the most beautiful gift of GOD; another certainly, that Lucrecius Book 5, they celebrated [with?] their [manhoods?].

For if, that he begged himself known of the things, It ought to be said, [ille=demonstrative, he] was a God, a God, glorious [G.] Memmius, who First of life; found that reasoning, what Now is named Wisdom; and who through the craft, from such strong waves, and such darkness, moored life in [havens] so calm, & light so clear.

Three different, & diverse definitions of Philosophy.

         One Plato, who
         described Philosophy [variations?]
         in different places.
Now the second pursuit of wisdom
he called by the name Etymology.
Sometimes he wishes that the weakening of animation is
                   from the body.
Sometimes he asserts that rotation ??
                   to truth & the divine.
Another of the Stoics, who define the meditation [of] Philosophy as the accomodation of art to life.
Third of Aristotle, who affirms that the science [of] Philosophy is the contemplation of truth. And [of] these his definition is the greatest and earliest,
propositioned by Aristotle in book 2 of Metaphysics text 3.
