44 people that I ever saw. The awful whip is what they have most to fear. They have two or three hours [[nooning?]] and I think by their appearance that they have plenty to eat. Their clothing is scarce [[?]] the name of clothing. They generally have on some rusty ragged old tow cloth pants and frock. There are five Negro drivers about the stores where I work, each having a gang of his own to look after, and when any one is fractious or unru(ly) it does not take long to reduce him to submission. Several times I have seen the whip to zealously applied, to feel very comfortable upon their naked bodies. At first they seem to feel it but after several blows they do not seem to exhibit so much sensibility. Being an invalid I am very much favoured about my work [[?]] is making Mahogany window frames Sashes and shutters and also several days turning at Mr McNabs Steam Machine shop. It is soon seen that I can do good work and there is no hesitation in putting me onto it. We have five Americans on the work Mr. Leonard W Kincaid from Newbury Vt  Mr Wm Shepland Mr Charles G.
