Thursday, January 4th.
At 2 PM made a speech to the Regiment of about an hour + a half advising them as to their future life. The Major Mr [Elon] was present + remarked to me that a man must be very blind not to see the future change in relations of the Blacks to the Whites.

The 48th Regt mustered out to day - Paymaster has come Called + spent the evening with the Mayor Mr. [Elam] in company with [Sumner] He gave an account of a Lieut Todd of the {unclear] how he seduced (probably) one of the ladies of the 1st circles
