We reached the Mouth of the Yellow Stone however without any dificulty, and as we glided on, I shot 5 Fancy Wood Ducks. _ A short time afterwards we landed to take in a curious pair of Elk Harris and at nearly Sun set we stopped and encamped at the foot of a high bluff, which was truly dangerous if Indians had been on or near The River. _ our supper was a good one, consisting of chickens brought by Mr Culbertson and the Young Ducks image? _ the weather was pleasant and we all slept well though closely packed. 17th Thursday. Started early; Saw 3 Big horses, some antilopes, and fully 20 Deer & 22 Swans, 1 wolf and some Ducks, Stopped a short time on a Sand bar. Mr C. shot a female Elk, and I Killed 2 Buffalo Bulls, we encamped at this spot and called it Buffalo Bluffs. In the evening we Killed Familial quadrivalent, and saw several Grisley Bears wallowing places. _ These are large & round and about1 foot to 18 inches deep. 18th Friday. Fine weather. Bell dropped at a superb male Elk. caught 4 Cat [[unclear. _ The 2 Bulls killed last night had not been touched either by Wolves or Bears to our astonishment we stopped to make an oar. Kayac is the French missouri on appel?, in for Buffalo Bulls. The Moose is called Original. In Assiniboin Tah-Tah. In Blackfeet Sick-he-che-choo. In Sioux Tah=Tah. we saw 11 to 20 female Elks drinking on a Sand bar, we tried to approach them, but they broke simultaneously and ran off into the willows after which we saw no more of them. we landed in pursuit, Bell shot at one and could not find it although very badly wounded. These animals are at times found? but at unclear? extremely vigilant , suspicious and well aware of the coming of their [[ennuscies?]. This and elongated about the size of a small wild plumb. It is dropped in the unclear?of all other animals of the Den site. Their appearance on a Sand bar animal? once I saw many horses or mules. We saw unclear? Bulls in parcels of 2 & 3. We hunted for game in rain this evening and encamped. 10th Saturday. The wolves were howling all night, and the Buffalo Bulls roaring just like the unclear? continued call of 100s of Drums mixed with the sound of illant? Macn?. Saw large gangs of Cows & Bulls and walked after them through the vines? of thickets. Came to Knife River along which I walked for march 2 Miles before I could cross it. found some? Indian signs, and I helped make fire and ab? sound? Coug
