The Sheriff of Nueces County at Corpus Christi, asks military assistance in connection with recent murders and robberies in that vicinity. Please go to Corpus Christi with Gerhard's Company or part of it and render what assistance you can to the Civil authorities there. If you deem it necessary, you can leave under proper instructions a part of the Company there, until matters are quiet, or order more there. Our men must act, if at all, under authority of Civil Court as a posse comitatus. | |||

In the month of January 1872 a Scout of sixty (60) Mexicans from the vicinity of San Dieto, a small town about thirty miles from Chihuahua, Mexico, crossed to this side of the Rio Grande in pursuit of a party of Indians, who has stolen a lot of horses at San Diego (towards the Guadalupe Mountains). The official report which conveyed this information states that you had a conversation with the Commander of that party, &c. The Commanding General of this Department will be indebted if you will give him all the information in your possession concerning this matter. In case you know of other persons who may have any knowledge of the facts, he will be pleased to have you communicate their names and residence to him. Very respectfully
