108 587. Juy 30. 1874. BUELL, [left margin] Lieut. Colonel Geo. P. Buell 11th Infantry GRIFFIN, FORT, [left margin] Commd'g. Fort Griffin, Texas.

Sir:

The Commanding General directs me to inform you that General MacKenzie will start from Fort Concho about the middle of August with a Column of Cavalry and Infantry to his old Supply Camp, and he will give you a column from Fort Griffin to act in concert with him and under his orders - further instructions will be sent you. In the meantime your Cavalry had better be kept within reach until final orders are given.
It is probable that two Companies of the 10th Cavy. will have to report to General Davidson, in which case Cavalry will be sent you from Concho.
The Chief Quartermaster has instructed your Post Qr. Mr. to call upon the Contractor for forage and the Commdg. General directs that you see that the instructions are carried out.
                                                                                            Very respectfully
                                                                                             Your obdt. servant

You will receive by this mail an order taking from you all your troops but one Company of Cavalry and two of Infantry.
The movement against hostile Indians will take place from Sill, Griffin and Concho, or rather MacKenzie's old Supply Camp, on the Fresh Fort of the Brazos.
To give proper strength to these Columns I have been forced to strip other Posts to the same naked condition, as yours is left in.
It is not anticipated however that the Indians will come in [strike] within the lines of the troops operating against them.
The order affecting your Post assumes that the Company of the 10" Cavalry, recently ordered to Fort Sill, has not been returned, [underline 3 words], as authorized by my telegram to Col. Taylor. Send with the Cavalry Companies all the Carbine ammunition (Cal. 45.) at your Post, except 100 rounds per man for the Company that remains. Very respectfully Your obdt Servant
                                 (Sgd) C. C. Augur Brig. Gen'l. U.S.A.
