What a comedown. Makes me think of the time I discovered the name Wm. P. | What a comedown. Makes me think of the time I discovered the name Wm. P. Schenek in Sandburg's "appreciations of help" in his "Remembrance Rock." I dropped him a note saying I knew a "Bill" Schenek who was said to have helped him, but the "Wm. P." didn't fit him any more than the "Doctor William Graham" who delivered a sermon before the king and queen at Windsor, and whose title of "Doctor William" drew a laughable pair of verses from Punch. Sandburg called me on the phone asking if he could send the letter along to "Bill." What, by the way, has become of "Bill" and Fritz Lieber who used to edit Science Digest? And the drama expert who edited applied science for Field's encyclopedia of wisdom (?) which showed Amundsen discovering the Northwest Passage 12 years before he was born? | ||
I haven't had a drink since the Christmas Eve of the year we came down. But on the evening of Wednesday, May 6th, at 7:30 P.M. I intend to imbibe through some secret means in this stricken county. | |||
