He is a most extraordinary creature & I wouldn't be too exercized by the recent outburst. For certain reasons of state, I shall have to try to mollify him (with my tongue in my cheek); but you are left perfectly free to be irritated by as uniquely bad manners as I have seen in some time. When I telegraphed Mr. Varney last Friday I had had only a distorted version of your telegram to Dr. Barnes. I trust that, the Barnes experiment having proved a colossal failure, the pendulum will swing & the Arts Club will have a most interesting & successful experience with the Fisk Singers & Mr. Culin.
