This Hurricane commenced Strong for some days past from Eastern | This Hurricane commenced Strong for some days past from Eastern end then N.E. Yesterday N.N.E. & then brought up [[?]] gale the [[?strongest?]] wind blew from N.E. & at 2.30 am Bayou [?] San Bernard - the Easterly bands Stood at 29 inches - barm fallen 4/10 1 m off from few hours before - filled the Bayou with Water - & then the N & N.N.E blew the waters up over the island - There is only one way to remedy this - By a Leveé - but this we cannot afford to Make - the Houses must be built upon higher [[?]] or trunk piles - It is impossible to say what is the loss - but 60 or 80,000$ not hardly defray it - perhaps 100.000 $ - 8 am 70º - Weather fine & clear & fine Airs from N.W - This Gale has been as severe as the Great one in October 1837 - A few more hours would have prostrated the Whole Town - We fear now & with reason for the Cotton Crop - [[?]] in Louisiana & Mississippi will be in a difficulty - Noon 78º 9 am 75º - Fine all day - Airs from N.W - This gale did much damage to the Island of Cuba the 15th | ||
Tuesday 20th 8 am 75º Cloudy Airs from S.SE. Noon 77º 9 am 76º 75 Attended Assizes - Case of Murder Commodore Hulbright indicted for that of one Jno Pole - his Cook. They had had words in this |
